2019 Malbec Museum Release

$60.00

In stock

A very special release of 9 bottles for Malbec Day 2025.

Production: 69 dozen

Colour: Deep Inky Purple

Aroma: Boysenberry jam, blackberry pie, black strap liquirice and hints of vanilla bean.

Palate: Fresh blueberry and boysenberry fruits, milk chocolate liquorice bullets with some tarry elements.

Underlying cedar and toastyness from fine grained French oak. A delicately weighted soft tannin structure

giving a wine with elegance and poise.

Viticulture: The vineyard is grown naturally using organic biological principals. Employing seaweed and fish

emulsion foliar fertilisers plus elemental sulphur and copper sprays for disease prevention. Nothing is wasted,

grape must is composted, mulched and mixed with manures then returned to the vineyard floor. Cover crops

of clover, peas and rye grass are grown between the vines which provide nitrogen and green mulch. Canopy

management is vital, hedging and leaf plucking are used to control exposure to sunlight and further our effort

to deliver perfectly ripe, balanced grapes to the winery. The grapes were picked on March 31.

2019 Vintage Rating 8/10: The 2019 vintage started about 2 weeks later than the previous few years and

had been cool – very different to the rest of the country.

Yields have been lower. Lovely white wines have had time to develop delicate flavours while retaining natural

acidity. A bit of mid-vintage rain refreshed the reds, then the fruit hung out there allowing for a long, slow

ripening period. There was no Marri Flowers so netting of all varieties was necessary.

Vinification: The grapes were picked in the cool of the morning on 25 th March 2019, 50% destemmed and

placed in open fermenters. The rest was put as whole bunches into a fermenter and fermented separately.

Innoculated with a neutral yeast and the cap plunged up to four times a day, by hand. After 10 days the wine

was kept on extended skins for a further ten days. Then the wine was drained and the must basket pressed off

to tank where it underwent a malolactic fermentation which softens the acid. The wine was then racked to a

mix of one and two year old French barriques, then left to mature for 12 months. Blended and put to bottle in

July 2020.

Technical Data: Alc. 12.7.0% pH 3.7 TA 6.1 g/l

“Hand plunged, basket pressed and matured in French oak barriques. 900 bottles only. Savoury

licorice and salted heirloom tomato on the nose. The role of oak is dominant here, both on the palate and

through the finish. No double it will sink into the folds of ripe black fruit in time. Cellar 2031” 90/100 Erin

Larkin – Wine Companion

“Only a very small batch of this wine has been made, which is a shame because it is a good example of what

can be done with malbec. Perfumed notes of red fruit with a deductive violet and bright blue fruit.” 95/100
